First confirmed case of virus in Wichita County

The Wichita County Public Health District on Wednesday reported the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in Wichita County.

The patient is a 64-year-old Wichita County resident who recently traveled to Budapest, Hungary.

He flew into DFW Airport and then drove to Wichita Falls. Upon return he developed a cough and a sore throat. He was seen by a private physician and was tested by a private laboratory.

The patient is currently being cared for at home, and movement has been restricted to the care setting only.

For the first time in several years, the Iowa Park Leader is not using color in our printing on our front and back pages this week.

Leader Publisher Dolores Hamilton said she made this temporary business decision in light of how financially affected the newspaper has already been from the Covid-19 virus.

“In order to be able to continue to relay important information to our readers for as long as possible, we are making some difficult budgetary decisions. This was one of them,” said Hamilton.

School’s response to COVID-19 impact detailed

Superintendent Steve Moody gave Iowa Park school board members an update on action taking place regarding the coronavirus at Thursday’s board meeting.

Moody said that during the last month Jamie Shipp, the school nurse, had been in constant contact with the county health department. “Updates are coming every day. . . almost every hour now,” he said. “She has been attending meetings every week at the county health department and then meeting back with us.”

Council meeting may be cancelled

There is a possibility that the regular meeting of the city council on March 23 will be postponed.

According to City Manager Jerry Flemming there is no urgent business on the agenda at this time. If there is no urgent business as of tomorrow, March 20, the meeting may be cancelled.

Monday the Electra Hospital District sent a press release with tips and suggestions on what to do and how to prepare for COVID-19.

The Electra Hospital District encourages you not to panic, but instead educate yourselves on the virus and what you can do to prepare and help prevent further spread of germs.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are recommending that those living in areas with minimal-to-moderate risk of the virus carry out a few basic measures to stay aware and alert of.
