Rebecca “Becky” Jean Baxter Mitchell
Rebecca Jean Baxter Mitchell (Becky), 80 of Iowa Park, passed away on Saturday, July 16.
Funeral services were held Monday at Faith Baptist Church in Iowa Park, under the direction of Lunn’s Funeral Home.
Becky was born on Oct. 27, 1941, in Kennett, MO., to Carolyn and Archie Baxter. She played basketball and baseball. She graduated from Green County Tech High School and went on to attend Arkansas State University.
In college, she majored in elementary education and pledged Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. She graduated in four years walking the stage just after her mother, Carolyn Baxter. After graduation, she moved to Iowa Park, to begin her teaching career where she taught first grade for seven years. While in Iowa Park, she met Dennis Mitchell. They married on June 4, 1966, at the Baptist Church in Mounds, AR. Dennis and Becky raised their family in Archer City, Graham, and finally Harlingen. She taught Bible Drill for almost 30 years. After her children moved away from home, she returned to the classroom where she completed 23 years in education in Harlingen.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Carolyn and Archie Baxter; and a brother, Bill Baxter.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Dennis Mitchell, her four children, Kellie Jones of Dallas, Scott Mitchell of Granbury, Trey Mitchell of Frisco, and Todd Mitchell of Abilene; a brother, Charley (Carole) Baxter of North Little Rock, AR.; and eleven grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Becky’s name to Faith Baptist Church of Iowa Park.
