Graveside services will follow at Highland Cemetery under the direction of Dutton Funeral Home in Iowa Park, Texas. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM at the funeral home on Friday, October 18, 2019.
Beverly graduated from high school and took classes on “ keypunch,“ which is a 1970’s term for computer. She spent two years at Woolco Department Store, then began her long career with the US Postal Service for 27 1/2 years—-working at a small PO in Tawanda, Kansas, then transferring to Wichita, Kansas for the last 25 1/2 years. The last ten years of her job required her to walk almost three blocks to the PO from the parking lot, a hard task in her declining health, but she faithfully did it in snow and ice as well, never complaining.
She was preceded in death by her Dad, Clifford Compton in 1996. She is survived by her Mother and stepdad, Norma and John Ekey, and her brother who was also her best friend, Calvin Compton.
If there was one word to describe Beverly’s life, it would be happy, in spite of all her health issues for the last twenty years. She accepted the Lord early in her life by reading the Bible her grandmother Gracie Lee, gave her as a child.
Beverly was gifted in writing, and a letter from her was always considered a gift ...usually consisted of five- six pages. She was so descriptive that she wanted the recipient to view vividly what she was saying. She saw the good in everything and she wrote about it in her many letters to family and her huge pen pal base. In fact, when she was seven, her teacher told her she wrote like a 21 year old person.
She loved life and everything it offered and family was EVERYTHING to Beverly. She and Calvin grew up in the 60’s enjoying swimming at the pool at their Dad’s company. They loved vacationing as a family... and attending every big family reunion in Texas.
She loved poetry, British movies... like “Pride and Prejudice”. Her favorite all time movie that she saw probably 25 times or more in her lifetime was “To Kill a Mockingbird”.
She also loved music, especially the older hymns. Her favorite book was a hymnal over 100 years old.
She lived a selfless, caring, compassionate life and was so grateful continually. Five years ago her severe cataracts had blinded her but she kept praying God would heal her in any way possible. He did! She had surgery even in her weakened condition, and had to walk down two flights of stairs to her car as electricity failed at that eye clinic. After her eyesight returned, she flourished in her letters and cards to everyone.
Her outward beauty was only surpassed by the inner beauty of a kind, thoughtful and committed Christian! She was a great treasure to all who knew her and we treasure NOW her great legacy she left of being good, kind and helping others see the good God has for them in this life. Her last words were to her Mother and brother about meeting them in Heaven.
The Bible says, “Blessed are the righteous for they shall never see the Spirit of Death” though her earthly body remains here, the “real” Beverly went directly to Heaven , with her Dad, Granny Lee , and so many other family member there to welcome her —- after she met the love of her life there with His arms outstretched——Jesus!!!
