COVID-19 cases surge this week in Wichita County
In May, 19 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Wichita County for the entire month. In June, the county has averaged 19 cases a day.
In fact, the number of new COVID-19 cases reported by the Wichita Falls-Wichita County Public Health District in June was more than three times the total of the three previous month combined.
In March, the health district reported a total of 38 new cases in the county; in April, 27 new cases were reported; and 19 in May. In June, Wichita County had 279 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus.
The reported number of confirmed cases hit a record Tuesday, with 45 new positive tests.
Since last Wednesday 133 new active cases of the novel Coronavirus were reported in Wichita County, with seven of those identified as residents of Iowa Park. This brings the total number of cases in the county since March 18 to 363, with 87 of those patients recovered.
Hospitalizations of those infected have also taken a grim turn. Of the eight positive patients currently hospitalized in Wichita County, seven are in critical condition.
Lou Kreidler, Director of Health for the Wichita Falls-Wichita County Public Health District expressed her concern about the rising numbers. “Our positivity rate has increased from 1.4% to 13% in the last two weeks,” Kreidler said. “I am highly concerned about the number of positive cases we are seeing especially with the 4th of July weekend coming up and places are moving forward with celebrations where large groups will gather. I would ask people to please stay home from celebrations if they have any symptoms of COVID-19 no matter how mild. Symptoms include headache, runny nose, congestion, cough, fever, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, diarrhea, new loss of taste or smell, muscle cramps or body aches. If a person attends an event please use hand sanitizer often, maintain social distancing from individuals who are not in your immediate party and wear a mask at all times except when eating or drinking. Please remember no matter how small the gathering the potential for spread is there so please weigh your risk prior to attending any type of event. “
Kreidler continued, “If we do not as a community begin to practice measures to limit the spread of COVID-19 we will continue to see an increase in the number of cases in our community and see increased pressure on our healthcare system.”
