Hawk Band earns 33rd straight Sweepstakes
(04/21/16)

For the 33rd consecutive year, Iowa Park High School’s Hawk Band has earned the coveted Sweepstakes Award.
The Hawk Band earned superior “I” ratings Saturday at the UIL Region 2 Concert and Sightreading Contest held at Wichita Falls Old High. Combined with the superior “I” rating given during last fall’s Region 2 Marching Contest, the IPHS band maintained its long tradition of excellence.
“We did it,” exclaimed Director Charlie Bradberry. “It was awesome. I actually had a judge come down from the balcony to find me. He wanted me to know that our concert was one of the most musical performances he had ever heard ... and he just wanted to come shake my hand to let me know that.”
Concert judges included Bryan Ferrell, JB Perry, and Dave Daniel. Sightreading judges were Mike Lunney, Harold Bufe, and Darrington White.
Comments from the judges included:
• “Great job and interpretation of Amazing Grace on the Alto Sax solo, it was so mature and musical”;
• “Very precise playing in this ensemble. Great attention to detail”;
• “Very musical performance – congratulations on a great job with a super director”;
• “Really mature band sounds – wonderful players and awesome fundamentals”;
• “This is a tremendous group. Thanks for working so hard.”
During the concert portion of Saturday’s contest, the Hawk Band performed Coast Guard March by James Swearingen, Steel by Randall Standridge, and Amazing Grace by Frank Ticheli, featuring Meghan Bradberry on the Alto Saxaphone.
